York
What it’s like
A campsite playground with swings and a climbing frame, plus a riverbank walk to stretch legs before or after pitching up.
This one's really a campsite with a playground attached, so the day out is whatever you make of it. Kids get swings, a family basket swing big enough for the grown-ups to squeeze onto, a seesaw and a climbing frame with a slide, all on site. Beyond the play equipment, the riverbank walk is the other thing to do, and it's a proper walk rather than a stroll if you follow it as far as the Ship Inn at Acaster Malbis, which the site reckons is about an hour each way.
Every pitch has electric hook up and a water tap, and there are two toilet blocks with disabled access and showers, plus a separate area for washing pots. Wifi's there too if you need to check emails between games of tag. The site itself only runs from 1 April to 31 October, so it's a spring-to-autumn spot rather than a year-round one.
If you fancy getting further afield, Naburn Marina has a waterfront cafe, and York itself is 7 miles off, close enough for a day trip if you're staying over. The adjacent club house has a fully licensed bar on Friday and Saturday evenings, which is a nice touch if the adults want a drink once the kids are worn out from the climbing frame. There's no railway station on the doorstep, mind: York station is 7 miles away, a taxi runs around £18, and the Askham Bar park and ride is about 10 minutes' drive if you'd rather leave the car there.
