What it’s like
A Day Rover ticket buys unlimited hop-on, hop-off steam and diesel train rides between Sheringham, Weybourne and Holt.
Once you've got a Day Rover ticket you can hop on and off as many times as you like all day, so a trip that's really "25 minutes on a train" turns into a proper day out if you break it up at each station. The steam and heritage diesel trains are the obvious draw, and there's a Play Coach at Holt Station plus model railways at both Weybourne and Holt to fill the gaps between departures.
Buying online in advance saves a genuine chunk of money: an adult Day Rover is £20.82 booked ahead against £24.50 on the day, and the family ticket gap is even bigger, so it's worth sorting tickets before you set off rather than paying at the gate. Children aged 2 and under travel free, and anyone under 16 needs a fare-paying adult with them, which is easy enough to forget if you're used to older kids wandering off to look at the engine.
Food-wise there's a buffet at each station and you're welcome to bring your own, so a picnic on the platform works fine while you wait for the next train. Parking is the one to think about depending which station you start from: Holt just asks for a £3 donation, Sheringham has proper Pay & Display, and Weybourne has so little space that arriving by train instead is genuinely the better plan there.
All three stations have step-free access and accessible toilets, and a wheelchair is kept at each one to help with boarding at no charge, though the oldest carriages can't be adapted so booking an accessible compartment ahead is the safer bet. Dogs are welcome on most trains for £3.50 but not on the Dining Trains, Santa Specials or Norfolk Lights Express, which is worth knowing if a family day out includes the family dog.

Plan your visit
How much does it cost?
An adult Day Rover is £20.82 booked in advance or £24.50 on the day, and a child ticket (3 to 15) is £14.45 advance or £17 on the day. A family of four works out at £57.80 in advance against £70 on the day, so booking ahead is worth doing.
Do we need to book?
Advance booking is strongly recommended, and it saves money too. Dining Trains, the Norfolk Lights Express and Santa Specials run to timed slots and need booking specifically.
What age counts as a child?
The child ticket covers ages 3 to 15. Children aged 2 and under travel free and do not need a ticket, but anyone under 16 must be with a fare-paying adult.
How long does the train journey take?
About 25 minutes between Sheringham and Holt, or 10 to 15 minutes if you are going to or from Weybourne. With a Day Rover you can hop off at any station and catch a later train.
Is there parking?
Holt asks for a £3 donation towards station upkeep, Sheringham has a Pay & Display car park, and Weybourne has very limited space so arriving there by train is the better option.
Can we bring food?
Yes, you can bring your own food and drink onto the trains, or buy something from the station buffets.
Are dogs allowed?
Dogs travel for £3.50 on most trains but are not allowed on Dining Trains, Santa Specials or the Norfolk Lights Express. Groups bringing eight or more dogs need to contact the railway in advance.
Is it wheelchair accessible?
Every station has step-free access and accessible toilets, and a wheelchair is available at each one to help with boarding at no charge. Some of the oldest carriages cannot be adapted, so booking an accessible compartment in advance is recommended.
Can we get there by public transport?
Sheringham Station is about a 2-minute walk from mainline rail services, so it is the easiest of the three to reach without a car.
What is there for kids to do besides the train ride?
There is a Play Coach at Holt Station and model railways at both Weybourne and Holt. Free activity sheets are available year-round, with extra activities laid on during school holidays and special events.
Are there carer's tickets?
A complimentary carer's ticket is available for registered carers accompanying a disabled adult, and can sometimes be issued for a child under 16 who needs extra assistance. You need to contact the Bookings Team in advance and documentation may be asked for.
Can pushchairs come on the train?
Prams and pushchairs travel with you but get stored in the Guard's van rather than staying with your seat.
