Motherwell
What it’s like
Free museum with a climbing tower and an outdoor play area with a water table, five minutes' walk from Motherwell station.
There's a "Climb Thru Time" tower here with a viewing platform, which is the sort of thing kids clock the second they walk in and want to do first. Outside there's a climbing frame, a water table and some giant games, so if the weather's behaving you could easily lose an hour out there before you've even looked at the exhibits properly.
It's free to get in, which makes it an easy one to slot into a wet Tuesday without worrying about ticket prices. The catch is the museum shuts for lunch every day between 11:30am and 12, which feels like an odd thing to build into a family visit, so time your arrival around that rather than turning up at half eleven expecting to walk straight in.
Parking's free at the rear, with three blue badge spaces, and it's step-free enough that a buggy or a wheelchair won't be a fight to get round. If you're coming by train it's a five minute walk from Motherwell station, which beats hunting for parking on a Saturday.
It closes over the Christmas and New Year period, from 25 December through to 4 January, reopening on the 5th. Outside of that it's open Monday to Saturday, just remember the lunchtime gap in the middle of the day.
