What it’s like

A residential adventure centre near Matlock where kids climb a 40ft ropes tower, try Via Ferrata on a real quarry face and build rafts.

This is proper outdoor stuff, not a soft play with a climbing wall bolted on. Kids aged 6 to 11 get stuck into high ropes on a 40ft tower with the Gladiator Challenge, Jacobs Ladder and a Leap of Faith that'll test anyone's nerve, plus a zip wire and the across the divide challenge. There's caving, canoeing, archery, orienteering and bushcraft with actual fire lighting, so nobody's short of something to try over a few days.

The bit worth saving energy for is the Via Ferrata on the quarry rock face, up to 8 metres of real climbing with proper protection, and the outdoor crag at Black Rocks for rock climbing and abseiling. Raft building turns into a team scrap fairly quickly by the sound of it. Younger or more nervous kids get low ropes and a mini zipwire with obstacles, so there's a gentler run for the group before anyone tackles the tower.

There is a weight limit on the high ropes, 120kg generally and 100kg for the Leap of Faith, which is worth flagging if you've got older or bigger kids in the group. Parking is free for up to 40 cars right opposite the entrance, and there's an all-terrain wheelchair on site along with accessible bedrooms and wet rooms. It's a licensed site with a bar, so this reads as a group or school trip setup rather than a casual afternoon visit, and arrival and departure times are fixed unless you've pre-arranged something different with your coordinator.

Birthday parties run for climbing groups aged 6 to 11, up to 12 kids, 90 minutes with an instructor plus food and room hire, though only between November and February and at £300 for the full package.
