Moses Gate Country Park
WHERE
Bolton
What it’s like
Woodland and waterside trails around old mill lodges, with a playground and routes for horses and bikes too.
The walking is the main event here. There are nature trails threading through woodland and along the water, plus separate horse and cycle routes if you'd rather cover more ground than a small pair of legs can manage. It's the sort of layout where you can pick a short loop for a wobbly toddler or a longer one if the kids are older and want to actually get somewhere.
There's a playground too, which is handy as the halfway point or the grand finale depending on how the walk's gone. Save it for the end if you can. A tired four-year-old will walk a lot further with a slide at the end of it than with one at the start.
Because it's all trails, water and open ground rather than a single attraction, this suits kids who like exploring more than kids who need something to do every five minutes. Bring boots if it's been raining, the waterside paths aren't going to be forgiving in trainers.
Plan your visit
What is there for kids to do?
Nature trails, woodland and waterside walks, and a playground. There are also separate horse and cycle routes if you fancy a longer route.
Is it buggy friendly?
The main trails are walking and cycle routes so a lot of it should be manageable, though waterside paths can get muddy after rain.
Is there a playground?
Yes, there's a playground as well as the trails, good for breaking up a longer walk.
How long should we plan for?
That depends which trail you pick. Shorter loops suit toddlers, longer ones suit kids who can walk further and want to explore the cycle and horse routes too.
