Country Parks & Nature Reserves in Manchester

For proper space to roam outside the city, Manchester families tend to head to Disley or Altrincham. Lyme, out at Disley, has a deer park, the Crow Wood playscape and gardens, with entry from about £4.50 for kids. Dunham Massey, near Altrincham, is another deer park and gardens combination, this time from £11, with more the feel of a full outdoor half-day than a quick visit. Both are outdoor sites with toilets, parking, a cafe and picnic areas, and both welcome dogs, so wet-weather backup plans need to come from elsewhere. Lyme works out cheaper if you are watching the budget, and the playscape gives younger children something to climb on rather than just walk past. Dunham Massey suits a slower day, picnic blankets out and the deer left well alone. Wheelchair access is fine at both, which helps if you are planning around a pushchair too.
