What it’s like
A free hilltop walk with a flat, easy trail, grazing ponies and sheep to spot, and views to hold a picnic up to.
The whole thing runs on a 500-metre easy access trail, flat enough for a buggy and short enough that a toddler can do the whole loop on their own legs without anyone melting down halfway. Benches are dotted along it, so it's not a route you have to power through in one go. The main entertainment is spotting the grazing animals, Exmoor ponies and Herdwick sheep, which does more to hold a four-year-old's attention than most paid attractions manage.
There's no entry fee and parking is free on site, which makes it an easy one to add to a day without much planning. It suits a quick half hour if you're just passing, or a proper long visit if the wildlife spotting and the scenery pull you in, and either way works. Dogs are welcome as long as they're kept under close control.
There isn't much structure to the visit beyond the trail and the view, which is either the whole appeal or a bit thin depending on what you're after. It's not somewhere to plan a full day around, but it's a solid stop for wildlife spotting, a stretch of the legs, or a picnic with a view that does the work for you.
