What it’s like
Fill a punnet with your own strawberries, apples or squash on a working Kent farm, weekends only from June to October.
This is a proper working farm rather than a set-up-for-visitors patch, and it shows in the ground underfoot as much as in what's growing. Through the summer you can pick strawberries, gooseberries and blackcurrants, and later on the plums, apples, pears and damsons come in, with sunflowers, peas and squash somewhere in the mix depending on when you turn up. There's no set list of what's ready on a given weekend, so it's a bit of a lucky dip, which is half the fun if you're not fussed about a specific fruit.
It only opens weekends, 10am to 4pm, from mid-June through to the end of October, so a weekday visit isn't an option here. Entry itself is free, you just pay for what you pick, and parking on site doesn't cost anything either. Bring old shoes rather than anything you're precious about, the ground is fairly flat and manageable in dry weather but turns properly muddy after rain, and wheelchairs and buggies will feel that.
The White Finch bakery on site does cakes and drinks if you need a sit down, though it shuts at 3pm, so don't leave your tea break too late in the day. There's a picnic option too if you'd rather bring your own food and make a longer afternoon of it. Once autumn's done, the farm reopens in December for Christmas trees, which is a nice excuse for a second trip.
