What it’s like

Free-roam VR battles and escape rooms in Nottingham's old YMCA gym, built for over-tens and teens rather than young kids.

This one's aimed at older kids, not toddlers. The minimum age is 10, and that's only for two of the Zero Latency games, Engineerium and Singularity. Everything else in the free-roam arena is 12+, and Far Cry VR is 16+ because of the language. Anyone 14 or under has to have an adult with them in the building, though the adult doesn't have to strap in and play too. The escape rooms follow a similar pattern, mostly 12+ with a couple open to 10+, and the horror-themed ones are 16 only.

The main event is the Zero Latency free-roam arena, where up to eight players wander around shooting zombies, fighting robots or exploring mystical worlds with headsets on and no wires trailing behind. A session runs about 45 minutes, roughly £20 a head, though the price shifts around depending on the game and when you book. There's also a Quest Arena for shorter 15-minute bursts at £10 a person if a full session feels like a big ask, and VR escape rooms for two or four players working through puzzles together for about an hour, from £55.

You need to turn up 15 minutes early. That's not a suggestion, it's the safety briefing and suit-up, and if you're late during that window you don't get to join the session, no refund. While you wait, there's a gaming lounge with Nintendo Switch and retro consoles free to play, plus pizza and a bar on site. Everything's card only, so leave the cash at home.

It sits inside the old YMCA gym across from the clock tower in the centre of town, about a 20 minute walk from the train station. Parking's not on site, you're looking at Trinity Square or the Victoria Centre car park and a five minute walk in. Downstairs is wheelchair accessible but you'll need to ring ahead to set up a session with the team.

Plan your visit

What age is this suitable for?

Ten and up for two of the Zero Latency games, but most of the arena is 12+ and Far Cry VR is 16+. Escape rooms are mostly 12+, with horror ones 16 only. Under-15s must have an adult present in the venue, even if the adult isn't playing.

How much does it cost?

Zero Latency runs about £20 a person for 45 minutes, though it moves around by game and time. Quest Arena is £10 for a 15-minute session, and escape rooms start at £55 for two players or £90 for four.

Do we need to book ahead?

Booking's required, it's all timed sessions rather than walk-in.

How early should we arrive?

Fifteen minutes before your slot for check-in, the safety briefing and getting suited up. Turn up late during that window and you'll miss the session with no refund.

Can you pay by cash?

Card only, no cash accepted on site.

What if someone in the group wears glasses?

Glasses are fine under the headsets, though larger frames can get uncomfortable. Contact lenses are recommended if you've got them.

Is there parking nearby?

Trinity Square or the Victoria Centre car park, both about a five minute walk from the door.

Is it wheelchair accessible?

The downstairs part of the venue is accessible, but you need to contact them first to arrange a special session with the team.

What is there to do while waiting for a session?

A gaming lounge with Nintendo Switch and retro consoles, free to use, plus pizza and a bar for food and drink.

How many people can play together?

Zero Latency takes up to six or eight depending on the venue, escape rooms are for two or four players, and Quest Arena fits up to four at once. Bigger groups get booked back to back with games to play while they wait.

Do they do birthday parties?

There's a kids party package from £29.95 a head for up to eight people, with exclusive arena access and 30-minute game rotations, plus console gaming in between.

What are the opening hours?

Closed Monday and Tuesday outside school holidays. Wednesday and Thursday it's midday to 8pm, Friday midday to 10pm, Saturday 10am to 10pm and Sunday 10am to 8pm.
