What it’s like

Pick your own pumpkin from the field, ride the tractor carriage and take a shot at the pumpkin cannon.

The main job here is picking a pumpkin straight off the plant in the Maxey family's fields at Kirklington, and the kids will want to inspect about thirty of them before settling on The One. James' Pumpkin Carriage tractor ride is the other big draw, plus a free maize maze, a straw bale mountain to clamber over and a cannon that fires pumpkins for anyone who fancies a go. There's a Wicked Witch character wandering about and a Halloween gift tent stuffed with decorations and toys for afterwards.

Admission is £2.50 for anyone over 16, free under that, and it's a genuine field: pumpkins themselves are paid for separately from £2, mini squash from 50p, with the carriage ride and bouncy castles £2.50 a head on top. Card only, no cash mentioned, so don't rely on loose change in your pocket.

It's a turn-up-and-go operation, no booking needed unless you're bringing a coach. Weekends through most of October run 9 to 5, but midweek hours shrink to 11 to 4 in the second week and 9 to 4 later on, and Halloween day itself closes at 3. Parking's free on site.

This is a proper field, not a manicured patch, so it churns to mud fast once the weather turns. Wellies are the sensible call over trainers. Pushchairs and wheelchairs are fine to bring but the site itself says it's at your own risk once it's wet underfoot, and dogs aren't allowed for hygiene reasons.

Plan your visit

£2.50 to get in if you're over 16, under-16s are free. Pumpkins themselves start from £2 and mini squash from 50p, paid separately from admission.

No, just turn up. Coaches or large groups need to book in advance for allocated parking.

Is there parking?

Free car parking on site.

What can toddlers do?

Under-16s get in free and there's a free maize maze plus a straw bale mountain, but it's a working field so buggies go in at your own risk if it's muddy.

Can we bring a pushchair or wheelchair?

They're allowed, but the field can get properly muddy so it's your own risk once the weather's turned.

Are dogs allowed?

They're not, for hygiene reasons.

What are the opening times?

Weekends through most of October run 9 to 5, midweek hours drop to 11 to 4 in mid-October and 9 to 4 later in the month, and Halloween day itself closes at 3.

How long does the season run?

From 3rd October to 31st October.

Are the pumpkins actually grown there?

They say the pumpkins are home grown on site.

There are benches in the food area.

Can we bring a school or large group?

Yes, and if a coach is involved that needs booking ahead so they can allocate parking.
