Lyric Hammersmith Theatre
WHERE
London
What it’s like
A Hammersmith theatre with panto and family shows, wheelchair access sorted and a £2 levy tucked onto every ticket.
This is a proper theatre rather than a soft play with a stage bolted on, so the day out here is about getting into your seats on time and settling in for a show. Under 5s aren't let in as a rule, though Chilled Performances make an exception for babes-in-arms, which is a decent workaround if you've got a very small one and still want to go.
The £2 restoration levy on every standard booking is a bit of a sting when you're already totting up ticket prices for a family group, though it's waived for access tickets, schools and Young Lyric members, and they're upfront that it goes on keeping a 130 year old building standing. Latecomers policy is worth knowing about too: turn up after curtain up and they might not let you in at all, or only seat you at a designated point later on, so don't be the parent still wrangling coats in the foyer when the lights go down.
Toilets are spread across the building, including the Bar, Stalls level and near the Creative Space upstairs, plus a baby change facility and accessible toilet near the entrance to the Reuben Foundation Wing. There's no permanent bag storage, so leave the big changing bag in the car if you can, and don't expect to buy a programme in advance either, they're for collection on the day.
If anyone in your group needs wheelchair or transfer seating, that's available for every show, and a companion seat comes free with a full price access ticket. Booking ahead for access needs is the sensible move rather than turning up and hoping.

Can under 5s come along?
Generally no, unless the age guidance for that particular show says otherwise. Chilled Performances are the exception and do admit babes-in-arms.
What happens if we're late?
You might be turned away entirely, or seated at a designated latecomers point once one comes up in the show. Either way you're not guaranteed your original seats.
Are there extra fees on top of the ticket price?
Yes, a £2 restoration levy gets added to every standard basket, though it's waived for access tickets, schools bookings and Young Lyric members.
Is the theatre accessible for wheelchair users?
Wheelchair and transfer seats are available for every show, and you get a free companion seat with a full price access ticket. Best to contact them in advance to sort it properly.
