What it’s like
Get hands on a potter's wheel to throw your own pot, or try clay sculpting and pumpkin painting workshops, all from age 8 up.
This is a proper working ceramics studio, not a paint-your-own-mug café setup. The big draw is Throw a Pot, an hour on the wheel with a tutor talking you through it, and the site is confident enough to say nobody's failed to throw something yet in years of running it. There's also Little Clay Ghosties, a hand-sculpting workshop for kids from 8, and seasonal one-offs like pumpkin painting if you'd rather stay away from the wheel.
Throw a Pot only runs on Saturdays, which is a bit of a squeeze if that's your only free day, and it's because the studio is booked out with courses through the rest of the week. Booking ahead is a must for everything here, there's no just turning up. Wear something loose and old, clay does wash out but it will get on you, and skip long sleeves or a skirt if you're on the wheel since you have to straddle it.
An eight-year-old can come along to Throw a Pot as long as one adult stays with them, and that adult doesn't pay if they're just watching rather than joining in. Sessions run about an hour to an hour and a half depending which one you pick, but the pot itself doesn't come home with you that day. Firing and glazing takes four to six weeks, so whatever gets made becomes a proper wait-and-see present rather than a same-day souvenir, and there's always a small chance a piece doesn't survive the kiln.
There's no café on site, just tea and coffee making facilities during courses, so eat before you come or bring snacks for after. Parking is free with 25 spaces and two disabled bays right outside the ground floor studio, and you can turn up half an hour before your session to sit and wait if you're early.
