What it’s like
Free mountain bike trails and tracks in Leeds, with coaching on offer and a café doing full breakfasts for when you're done.
This is a bike park through and through: proper mountain bike trails and tracks cut through woodland, open for anyone to ride without booking. Kids can go from a first wobbly go on a pedal bike right up to tackling proper tracks, and there's coaching available if you want someone else to do the teaching for a change. Walking round the park is fine too if you've not brought a bike or just fancy a look before you commit.
It's free to use, which is the headline here, though they do ask for a donation to keep the place running and that seems fair enough given what you're getting. It's run by a not-for-profit called Cycle Pathway CIC rather than the council, which probably explains why nobody's chasing you for a ticket. No forms to fill in either, unless you're hiring equipment, in which case there's a simple one to sign.
Because it's open woodland, the trails do get the odd obstruction or bit of debris despite daily checks, so it pays to ride with your eyes open rather than assuming every metre's been swept. Opening hours vary through the week: Wednesdays run till 8pm if you fancy an evening session, weekends are 9 till 5, and it's shut Mondays.
The onsite café covers proper breakfasts, burgers, sandwiches and cakes, and dogs are welcome in there too. Parking is council-run nearby at £1 for two hours, though it tends to lock up around 7pm, so don't leave your evening ride too late if the car's outside.
