What it’s like

Kit up and hunt opponents through a foggy laser maze of catwalks and mazes, in 20-minute games from age 7.

You get a body pack and a laser, and you're sent into an arena built from catwalks, mazes and fog, with music and lights doing their best to disorientate you. Each game runs 20 minutes, and that includes the 5-minute safety briefing, so you're properly shooting for about 15 of those minutes. Staff check you in at mission control first, where everyone picks a game name, then it's into the airlock for the rules before you're let loose.

The site lists a minimum age of 7 to play, plus a height minimum of 1.1m, so a smaller seven-year-old might get turned away on the day even if the birthday invites have gone out. Flat shoes with a gripping sole are recommended, and heels or open-toe shoes aren't a good idea for the running about (though running itself isn't allowed in the arena, along with any physical contact). One game is £6.95, or you can stack up to three for £17.95 a head. Midweek Madness gets you three games for £12 between 3pm and 9pm Monday to Friday, and Zappy Hour is two games for £8.95 at weekend 10am starts or school holiday weekday sessions from 12pm, both need pre-booking.

Birthdays get their own package: two games, a VR go, pizza and squash for £19.95 a head with a minimum of 8 players, and there's an exclusive Premium option for up to 24 players at £350. If you'd rather hire the whole arena without the party trimmings, that's £100 for one game, £170 for two or £220 for three, all up to 24 players. There's a climbing wall with projector games and a few VR experiences on site too, including a virtual jetpack and rollercoaster, plus Galaxy Golf, so a party can easily fill an afternoon beyond just the laser games.

Booking needs a 50% deposit and they want you there 15 minutes early. Parking is at Derwent Parade, Pride Park, but you have to enter your registration at the front desk or risk a ticket, since it's a managed car park. Wheelchair users can get around the building fine but the laser arena itself isn't accessible.
