What it’s like

A darkened multi-level arena where you and your kid can shoot it out with laser packs, games running every 20 minutes.

You get kitted out with a laser gun and pack, then sent into a dark, multi-level arena to battle it out with up to 38 other players. There's no gentle warm-up here, just a 5-minute safety briefing followed by 15 minutes of proper game time, and the whole thing is over in 20 minutes flat. That's short for the price, but games run on the hour, 20 past and 20 to, all day, so if your kid wants another go you can just queue up for the next slot.

You need to be 6 or over and 1.1 metres tall to play, which rules out a lot of the under-fives, and there's no crouching, crawling or physical contact allowed once you're in there. It's £7.50 for one game or £12 for two, which stacks up if you've got a group wanting a rematch. Booking ahead is the sensible move, especially at weekends, since spaces aren't held for you otherwise.

One thing worth knowing before you go: there's no viewing area, so if you're not playing you'll be waiting outside rather than watching through glass. Parking is in a multi-storey nearby at around £1.50 an hour, and it's a short walk from the train and bus stations if you'd rather skip the narrow car park altogether. Birthday parties are a regular thing here, with a dedicated host laid on for the day.
