What it’s like
Pick a piece from the shelves and paint it, with baby footprints and handprints on offer too.
You turn up, pick a bit of pottery off the shelf and get on with painting it, no skill required. Daytime sessions run 1.5 hours and everyone's welcome, from babies upwards, which is rare for this sort of place. Thursday and Friday they'll also do baby prints, footprints for the little ones, handprints once they're toddling, so it doubles up as a nice one for a first birthday or just a lazy afternoon.
The studio fee is £4 a head, then you're paying for whatever piece you've chosen, anywhere from £8 for something small to £50 for the bigger stuff. You'll need to book ahead and stump up a £10 per head deposit, which comes off your final bill on the day, fair enough as a way of stopping no-shows but a bit of a faff if you're deciding last minute. Once you're done painting, the wait is the sting: 2 to 3 weeks for firing before it's ready to collect, and they only hold finished pieces for 6 weeks, so don't forget about it.
If you fancy an evening out without the kids, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday there are 2-hour BYO sessions from 7pm, adults only unless you've got a baby in a sling. Parties are handled properly too, £350 minimum spend with no extra hire charge, room for 20 painters, and you can bring your own booze, cake and even send over a Spotify playlist for the afternoon. Parking is free on the street nearby, though it's a short stroll down the hill from around St Andrews Park.
