What it’s like
A pottery studio for older kids and adults, with wheel tasters, hand-building and glazing all done for you.
This isn't a spot for young children messing about with clay for half an hour. Clay Shed's group events and workshops start at 11, and the workshops themselves are for adults only, so it's really a teenager-and-parent activity rather than a family day out with the little ones in tow.
What you're actually doing is pottery wheel tasters and hand-building, with the studio handling the glazing and firing afterwards. That's the bit that stings a little: your finished piece isn't ready to take home on the day, you're back a few weeks later to collect it. Group events run £60 a head for groups of four to ten, which feels steep for what's essentially an afternoon, though it does include the firing and finishing.
If a teenager's keen on clay rather than just killing an afternoon, the Clay Talks are a cheaper way in at £7 for non-members, starting 6.30pm with a Q&A and finishing around 8pm. There's no children's party option here, which is worth knowing if you were hoping to book the studio for a birthday.
Booking isn't a quick online job either. Non-members have to email to arrange an appointment, so build in a bit of lead time before you turn up.
