Ifield Barn Theatre
WHERE
Crawley
What it’s like
Live pantomimes and plays staged in a genuine 700-year-old barn, with free parking right next door.
You go for the show, but the building does a fair bit of the work too. This is a 700-year-old barn turned theatre, so even before the curtain goes up there's something to look at, all beams and history rather than a standard black-box hall. The programme runs to pantomimes and plays, the sort of thing you could bring a family along to for an afternoon or evening out without much fuss.
Booking is a bit old-fashioned in the nicest way. You can book online, but there's also an in-person slot on Sundays from 12:30 to 2pm starting two weeks before each show, and if you miss both of those you can just turn up an hour before curtain and buy at the door. That door sale option is handy if you decide on the day, though it does mean no guarantee of a seat if a show's popular.
Getting there is straightforward if you're driving, since parking is free in the car park right next to the theatre, no faffing about with meters or a walk from a side street. If you'd rather not drive, Ifield railway station is about a 10 minute walk away on the Thameslink and Southern Rail lines.
Accessibility has been thought through properly. There are wheelchair spaces at A6, A7 and A8 that can take up to two wheelchairs, step-free access into both the foyer and the auditorium, and an accessible toilet in the foyer. Worth getting in touch ahead of your visit if you need one of those spaces, so they can hold the best position for you.
