What it’s like
A 50 minute narrowboat cruise along the canal with commentary on history and wildlife, capped at 12 people a trip.
Fifty minutes is about right for a cruise with kids under 12: long enough to spot herons and hear the commentary on the canal's history, short enough that nobody's asking to get off halfway through. Evening cruises run longer at an hour and a half, which feels more like a grown up night out than a family one.
The boat only takes 12 people, so it never turns into a crowd of strangers, but that cap cuts both ways. Book as a small party and they'll ask you to bump up the numbers or move your slot if nobody else has booked that time, so a group of two or three should expect a phone call. £15 for an adult and £8 for a child isn't pocket change for under an hour on the water, though it's the sort of thing that sticks in a child's memory more than most.
Dogs are welcome on board, which is a nice touch if you're bringing the family pet along too, and they'll sort vegan, gluten free or vegetarian food for anyone who needs it. Parking's free at the Stubbing Wharf pub car park if you're driving, or it's a pleasant enough 15 minute walk from the train station through the park and along the towpath if you fancy stretching your legs first.
One thing to flag: cruises depend on there being enough water in the canal, so a cancelled trip isn't unheard of if levels drop. Departure is strictly on time too, so turn up with a buffer rather than sprinting down the towpath at the last minute.
