What it’s like

Boat trips through Britain's longest canal tunnel, plus a towpath walk and tea and cake afterwards.

The big draw here is the boat trip through Standedge Tunnel itself, which the site is proud to say is the longest canal tunnel in Britain. You go in on the boat and come out the other side having gone right under the Pennines, which is a properly odd thing to explain to a kid afterwards. Boats run most Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays at 10:30, 11:30, 1:00 and 2:00, so you're working around fixed slots rather than turning up whenever.

Outside the tunnel there's the Admiral's Trail, a canalside walk that's an easy way to fill time before or after a trip without needing wellies and a full day of it. It suits a family happy with a couple of hours rather than a whole outing, boat trip, a stretch of towpath, then cake.

Worth knowing before you go: it's card only, no cash accepted anywhere on site, so don't turn up planning to pay with coins for the tea. The Watersedge Coffee House only opens on boat trip days, and on days when the Through Trip is running they don't do the shorter Discovery Boat rides, so if you've got a toddler who won't sit still for the full tunnel trip, check which trip is on before you set off.

Parking on site is limited to a few accessible spaces, and the practical option is to park near Marsden Railway Station using postcode HD7 6DH and walk the fifteen minutes in along the towpath. That's fine for older kids but worth factoring in with a buggy or if anyone's tired legs are already a factor before you've even got to the boat.

The Watersedge Coffee House does tea and cake, but it's only open on days when boat trips are running.
