WHERE

Sheffield

What it’s like

A sit-down meal on a boat that cruises Sheffield's waterways, from pie and peas to a full three-course dinner.

This isn't a "hop on, hop off" kind of boat trip. You book a meal and a cruise together, so think of it more as a restaurant that happens to float. Options range from a pie and pea supper up to a proper three-course sit-down meal or an afternoon tea, and there are festive versions of most of these too if you're planning around Christmas.

Kids are welcome and there are child prices on most menus, including the afternoon tea cruise at £29.95 and a pie and pea supper at £27.95, a full fiver less than the adult version. The three-course restaurant cruise runs £43.95 for a child against £48.95 for an adult, so it's not exactly a cheap night out for a family of four, more an occasion than a regular outing.

A few things are worth knowing before you book. There's no bring-your-own food or drink allowed at all, that's down to the alcohol licence, so don't turn up with a picnic or a bottle of prosecco for a birthday. There's also a damage deposit that gets checked after the cruise, which is a bit of a faff but presumably keeps things civilised on board. Parking is the real sting: none of the nearby car parks are included in the price, and a few of them shut early, so factor that into your evening.

Booking has to be done by phone or email rather than online, and you'll need a deposit within a week to hold the date, either £200 for a full boat charter or £10 a head for a smaller party. It's wheelchair accessible, which is handy given you're dealing with gangways and a moving vessel.

Plan your visit

How much does it cost?

Prices start around £27.95 for a child on the pie and pea supper, up to £54.95 for the festive three-course meal. Most menus have separate child and adult pricing.

Do we need to book in advance?

You do, and not online either, you'll need to phone or email them directly. A deposit is due within 7 days of booking, either £200 for a full charter or £10 per person for a small party.

Can we bring our own food or drink?

No. That's down to their alcohol licence rather than them being awkward about it, and anything brought aboard gets held until the end of the cruise.

Is it suitable for a mixed-age family group?

As long as your party is at least 20 people the whole boat is yours, so grandparents and kids can all be on the same booking.

What food options are there?

Pie and pea supper, a two or three-course restaurant meal, or an afternoon tea cruise, all with child pricing available. There are festive versions of most of these with extra courses or dessert.

Is there parking?

There are four car parks nearby plus meters on Furnival Road, but none of it's included in the cruise price. Some of the car parks also close earlier than you might expect, so check the time before you park up.

Is the boat wheelchair accessible?

It is, which is worth knowing given you're dealing with a gangway onto a moving boat.

Can we decorate for a birthday or celebration?

You can, and the boat's available an hour before your cruise time to do it. They ask for blue or white tack rather than sellotape or pins, and they've got hooks ready for balloons and bunting.

Is there a deposit for damage?

A damage deposit is required and the boat gets inspected after your cruise, so keep that in mind if you've got excitable kids or a lively party on board.

How do we get there without a car?

Sheffield Midland Station is about a quarter mile away, roughly a 10 to 15 minute walk.
