What it’s like

Ride steam and diesel heritage trains between Rowsley South and Matlock - kids under 16 travel free with a paying adult.

Climb aboard a heritage steam or diesel train for a scenic ride along about four miles of the old Midland Railway route through the Derwent Valley. Standard services call at Darley Dale between Rowsley South and Matlock Platform 2, with departures typically at 11:00, 13:00 and 15:00 on coloured operating dates.

Adult Single tickets are £8.50; Adult Return/Rover tickets are £15 for all-day travel. All children under 16 travel free when accompanied by a fare-paying adult - do not treat free child travel as the from-price. Buy regular day tickets on the day at the Rowsley South booking office or from the on-train inspector (cash or card, no Amex). Dining trains, Santa Specials and driver experiences need pre-booking.

Trains only run on the calendar operating dates - a blank date means closed, so check before you travel. Busy steam Sundays can mean a queue at the booking office. Matlock Platform 2 parking is council pay-and-display; Rowsley South has a large free car park. Soft Play is not part of this day out.
