Steam Railways & Boat Trips in Leeds

Nothing this side of the county runs on rails right in the city centre, but Middleton Railway is only about three kilometres out, a short steam or diesel ride through Middleton Park with woodland trails either side and two engine cabs the kids can climb into. For a proper day trip, York's National Railway Museum is free to get in and has the Flying Scotsman on show, Station Hall, and an optional Wonderlab if you fancy paying for the extra bit. Further out, Hebden Bridge Cruises does a 50 minute narrowboat trip along the canal with a running commentary on history and wildlife, and Standedge Tunnel out near Huddersfield takes you through Britain's longest canal tunnel followed by tea and cake at the visitor centre. For toddlers, the short Middleton ride is the easiest one to manage, and it's got a cafe and baby change on site. York's museum suits older children who want to poke about for hours, and it costs nothing beyond travel. Hebden Bridge Cruises books up fast as it's capped at twelve people, so sort tickets ahead, and it starts from £8. Standedge is the one for a slower, scenic afternoon with parking on site.
