What it’s like

A free BMX track you can lap whenever no session's on, though training days need booking through an app and a full face helmet.

The track itself is the whole point, and it's free to ride whenever there's no training session or race on. Bring a bike and the kids can lap it as long as they like. Saturday mornings are the busiest time to turn up on spec, because four training groups run between 9 and 3: Beginner, Novice, Intermediate and Expert.

If your child wants coaching rather than free laps, the Saturday groups are the way in, and there's a Breakfast Club from 9 to 10. Wednesday evenings, 6 to 8, are for Intermediate and Expert riders only. There's a Rider Pathway through the levels, and coaches decide when a rider moves up, which is worth knowing if yours is keen to progress quickly. Everyone who can already ride a bike is welcome to train, member or not; joining only knocks money off session fees.

The rules are the faff. Full face helmet, gloves and long trousers are required to use the track, no exceptions, so that's kit to sort out before your first visit rather than on the day. The site is upfront that BMX carries its own risks. And training isn't a walk-up: bookings go through the Spond app, and you have to apply to join the club's group first. Worth doing that before you promise a Saturday session.

Ages are listed from one, but honestly this is a place for a child who can already ride. If yours is still on a balance bike, free laps on a quiet afternoon suit better than a structured group.

Plan your visit

Is it free?

Yes, the track is free to use whenever no training session or race is running. Training sessions cost money, and the club says membership discounts the session fee.

Do we need to book?

Only for training. Free laps on the public track don't need booking, but training sessions are booked through the Spond app and you have to apply to join the club's group first.

When can we just turn up and ride?

Any time the track isn't in use for training or a race. Saturday training runs 9 to 3 and Wednesday sessions 6 to 8, so those are the hours to avoid if you want the track to yourselves.

What kit do we need?

A full face helmet, gloves and long trousers are required to use the track. That applies to everyone riding it.

What age does it suit?

The club lists ages from one, but the track is best for a child who can already ride a bike. Training groups are split into Beginner, Novice, Intermediate and Expert.

Can my child train without joining the club?

Anyone who can already ride a bike is welcome to train. Membership isn't required, it just gets you a discount on session fees.

Which session should we pick?

Saturday has four groups: Beginner, Novice, Intermediate and Expert, plus a Breakfast Club from 9 to 10. Wednesday evenings, 6 to 8, are for Intermediate and Expert riders.

Who decides when a rider moves up a level?

The coaches do. There's a Rider Pathway between the levels, and progression is down to their call rather than yours or your child's.
