What it’s like

An indoor climbing wall, sports halls and proper athletics tracks, open to the public with pay-as-you-go sessions you book online.

The draw for kids is the indoor climbing wall. Beyond that there's a netball hall and sports halls for ball games, squash courts, 3G pitches, and indoor and outdoor athletics tracks if you've got a child who's got into running and wants somewhere proper to train. The campus gym runs four training zones including a classes studio, and the community can use all of it, not just students and staff.

The athletics tracks and the climbing wall are the two bits I'd pick between. If your child is in a running club or wants to try one, the tracks are the obvious reason to come. If they'd rather climb and hurl a ball about than do laps, the wall and the halls are where they'll spend the session. The site doesn't put ages on any of it, so it's worth knowing your own child before you commit to a particular activity.

Open hours are long. Weekdays the Sports Park runs 9am to 9.45pm, the Indoor Athletics Centre 9am to 9pm and the Sports Centre from 7am to 11pm. Weekends are shorter: Sports Park 9am to 6pm Saturday and 9am to 5.45pm Sunday, the Indoor Athletics Centre 9am to 6pm both days, the Sports Centre 9am to 7pm. Everything shuts on Bank Holidays, so don't plan a trip for one of those.

Pay-as-you-go community sessions are booked online, so sort that before you travel rather than turning up hoping. Programmes run across the year but change with the seasons, which means the activity you want might not be on the timetable in every school holiday. Lift and ramp access runs across the site, so bringing a buggy or a wheelchair isn't a problem.
