What it’s like
Free to walk into, with books for every age and a bookable magic table that's worth ringing ahead about.
Borrowing books costs nothing, and that's the main thing here. There are books for all ages, from board books up to whatever your teenager is pretending not to want, and the computers are free to use for members who book ahead, in two-hour slots. A one-hour drop-in session is there if you just need twenty minutes of peace while someone hunts down a chapter book.
The Tovertafel is the one to save for last if you've got a child who needs a reason to come in. It's a magic table, a projector that throws games onto a flat surface, and you have to ring the library to book it rather than turning up and hoping. That's the bit worth planning around.
Two catches worth knowing. The computers shut down fifteen minutes before closing, so a 6pm session on a Monday or Thursday gets cut short at a quarter to seven whether you've finished or not, and the library shuts entirely on Sundays and bank holidays. Printing and photocopying cost extra, so bring change if homework needs doing on the spot. There's free wifi if you'd rather use your own device.
A meeting room is available to hire, which covers birthday parties and local groups, and you'd sort that through the library. Opening hours are the thing to check before you set off: Monday and Thursday run to 7pm, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday close at 5pm, and Saturday finishes at 4pm.
