What it’s like
Free canal walk past 21 locks stacked up a hillside, with a flat towpath that's easy going for buggies.
The thing to see here is the "stairway to heaven", 21 locks climbing the hill one after another, and it's free to look at, which is rare for a proper day out. Kids can watch boats working their way through if you time it right, though the site doesn't promise anything about timings so it's pot luck whether there's a narrowboat actually locking through when you turn up. Either way, the towpath itself is level, so it's an easy stretch for smaller legs or a buggy without anyone moaning about hills.
There's a welcome station with some history on the locks, which is worth five minutes even with a fidgety six-year-old, and it gives the walk a bit more shape than just there-and-back. Bring a picnic or use the cafe on site, there are toilets too.
Parking is pay and display, just over the bridge from the Hatton Locks offices, which stings a bit given the attraction itself costs nothing. It's not a big activity with rides or shows, more a wander and a look.
