WHERE

Stratford-upon-Avon

What it’s like

A guided walk through Stratford's Shakespeare sites, told in stories rather than plaques, running most afternoons.

You walk just over a mile with a guide who does most of the talking, taking in the Birthplace, the striking old buildings on the way and finishing at Holy Trinity Church, where Shakespeare's buried. It runs at 2pm on weekdays through April to September, and the site's honest that it's up to two hours but paced to the group, so it can run shorter or drag on a bit if people ask questions.

The actual walking is only about 45 minutes of the two hours. The rest is standing around listening to stories, which suits anyone who fancies the history without a proper hike, but it's worth knowing if you've got a child who can't stand still for a story. Entrance to attractions isn't included in the ticket, though you do get discounts at some local shops, cafes, pubs and restaurants along the route, which softens the day a bit if you're stopping for lunch after.

Booking's advisable rather than optional in practice: numbers are limited on each tour, and turning up on the day risks being turned away if it's full. If plans change, you get a full refund with 48 hours notice, less than that and it's a phone call to see if they'll shift your booking instead. No-shows don't get refunded.

Wheelchairs and mobility scooters aren't provided but can be hired at Shopmobility in the Bridgeway multi-storey, a sensible thing to sort before you turn up rather than on the day. The train station's a five minute walk from the town centre, handy if you're coming in without a car.

Plan your visit

How long does the walk take?

Up to two hours, though it moves at the group's pace so it can run a bit shorter or longer. Only around 45 minutes of that is actual walking, the rest is standing and listening to stories.

Do we need to book?

It's advisable. Numbers are limited on each tour and if it's full on the day, you won't be able to join.

Does it still go ahead if it's raining?

The tour goes ahead, so bring an umbrella or waterproofs if rain looks likely. In the cold, wrap up warm, and in the heat, a hat and water are worth carrying.

Is it accessible for wheelchairs or mobility scooters?

There's no equipment on the tour itself, but wheelchairs and mobility scooters can be hired at Shopmobility in the Bridgeway multi-storey car park nearby.

What if I need to cancel?

A full refund if you cancel at least 48 hours before the tour departs. Less notice than that, give them a call and they may be able to move your booking to another date.
