What it’s like
A free pocket garden in Norwich with a family garden club, Tai Chi and board games sessions alongside herbs and fruit you can pick.
This is a community-run patch off Grapes Hill where the point isn't a big day out, it's pottering. There's a free family garden club with craft activities and small garden tasks for kids to get stuck into, and the garden itself doubles as an edible trail. You're told you can pick herbs and fruit as you go, just take a small share and leave the rest, and it's worth actually reading the labels since not everything growing there is safe to eat.
Alongside the family sessions there's volunteer gardening, Tai Chi and board games, all free and none of them need booking. The Wednesday and alternate Sunday gardening sessions are open to anyone who fancies getting their hands dirty rather than just watching, which is a nice way to fill an afternoon with a child old enough to be trusted with a trowel.
Opening hours shift with the seasons, stretching to 8pm in summer and closing as early as half four in winter, so it's not a place you'd plan a whole day around, more a stop on the way somewhere else or a regular Wednesday habit. It's free to get in throughout, there's blue badge parking and it's wheelchair accessible.
Facilities
Plan your visit
Is it free to visit?
Yes, there's no entry charge, and the family garden club, volunteer gardening, Tai Chi and board games sessions are all free too.
Do we need to book anything?
Booking for any of it. Just turn up for gardening sessions, Tai Chi or board games.
Can the kids pick anything from the garden?
Herbs and fruit are fair game if you take a small share and leave some for others and the wildlife. The raised beds are rented to individuals so those are off limits, and a few plants in the garden are poisonous so it's one to supervise.
What are the opening hours?
It runs 9am to 8pm in May to August, 9am to 6pm in spring and early autumn, and 9am to 4.30pm (or dusk if earlier) from late October through winter.
