What it’s like

An evening walking tour of eight haunted spots around the Lanes, with actors in Victorian dress, for over-16s only.

This one's for the over-16s. It's a 70 minute walk around eight sites in Brighton's Lanes with a history of murders, apparitions and poltergeists, told by a guide, and actors in full Victorian attire pop out along the way to give you a proper jolt. There's no age limit for a spooky story, but the site sets the minimum at 16, so it's more a date night or a group of mates thing than a family outing.

There's no booking system, you just turn up for the evening start. It runs Wednesday to Saturday evenings at 7.30pm, with the regular Saturday slot at the same time. Halloween gets two departures instead of one, 6pm and 7.30pm on both the 28th and 31st October, which suggests they expect a crowd for those dates and the earlier slot might be the calmer one if you're not keen on queuing in the dark.

Money-wise it's £12 for an adult and £8 concessions, which covers under-16s and students if you're bringing a younger group member along as a spectator rather than, well, you know, a walker. There's a family ticket at £32 for two adults and two children too, worth a look if concessions apply to your crew and you fancy making a night of it together. They take cash or card.

Seventy minutes is a fair length for an evening out without it dragging, long enough to get properly unsettled by the eighth stop without your feet giving out first.
