What it’s like
Guided walking tours around Brighton's history, LGBTQ+ heritage and the Lanes, booked in advance rather than turned up to.
You walk. A guide, wearing a blue Institute of Tourist Guiding photocard so you know you've found the right person, takes you round Brighton on foot, telling the stories behind the streets. There's the main Only in Brighton tour, a Piers and Queers route through the city's LGBTQ+ history, and a Secrets of the Lanes walk through the shopping maze that trips up most first-time visitors trying to find their way out.
Everything has to be booked ahead. There's no wandering up and joining a tour on a whim, which is a bit of a faff if you're the sort who decides things on the day, but it does mean you're not stood waiting to see if a tour's actually running. You'll get the meeting point and the guide's mobile number once you've booked.
Children are welcome on the standard tours, and school groups can get a private tour shaped around the group's age. The routes are step-free, so pushchairs and wheelchairs are fine in principle, though Brighton's pavements themselves can be narrow and crowded, and that's more about the town than the tour. Nothing to eat or drink is included, but the Lanes are stacked with cafes if you need a stop halfway round.
Bring something waterproof regardless of the forecast. Brighton doesn't get much rain over the year, but short showers turn up out of nowhere, and you'll be outside the whole time.

Children are welcome on the tours. School groups can also arrange a private tour tailored to the group's age.
Can we book a private tour?
A private tour on the main routes, Only in Brighton, Piers and Queers, or Secrets of the Lanes, is £210.
Is the route buggy or wheelchair friendly?
The routes themselves are step-free. Brighton's pavements can get narrow, uneven and crowded though, so it's not always a smooth ride.
