What it’s like
A free contemporary art gallery in a converted warehouse, with changing exhibitions, a zine and artist-book library, and talks to drop into.
This is a working gallery in a big open warehouse space, not a museum in the traditional sense. Exhibitions change and can be genuinely unpredictable in form, so what you find on the wall (or hanging from the ceiling, or making a noise in the corner) one visit might be nothing like the next. That's part of the appeal if you like contemporary art that doesn't sit still, though it's worth knowing some shows include loud or repetitive sound and low light, which won't suit everyone.
There's a library on site stocked with artist books and zines, which is a nice thing to poke through if the exhibition itself is a quick look. G39 also runs workshops and talks about art practices, so it's not purely a walk-round-and-leave sort of place if you catch one of those.
It's free to get in and open Wednesday to Saturday, 11am to 5pm. Everything is on the ground floor with no indoor steps at the main entrance, just a single low step at the side door, and there's free parking right in front of the building. The gallery can get cold in winter.
