Fort Perch Rock
WHERE
Wirral
What it’s like
A sandstone sea fort where you walk the 15ft-thick walls on a guided tour, or lock yourselves in a WWII escape room with actors playing along.
Two ways in here, and they're genuinely different days out. The guided tour takes two hours and leans hard on the fort's history, those 15 ft thick sandstone walls get talked up a lot, and fair enough, they're the reason this place is still standing after all this time. Two hours is a proper commitment for a younger child who wants to touch things and move on, so this one suits a kid who already likes castles and forts rather than one who needs constant action.
The escape room is the livelier option. It's WWII-themed, live actors are in the room with you, and it's built for teams of two to eight, so it works as well for a family group as it does for a gang of older kids on their own. If you've got a mix of ages under one roof for the day, splitting into a tour group and an escape room group isn't a bad plan.
Booking is required for both, and there's no getting round that, so this isn't one to turn up to on a whim. Last entry for all shows is 8pm, which gives you a decent run at an evening visit if mornings don't suit.
The Mess café is the practical bit. Tea, coffee, cakes made daily, paninis and what they call authentic Italian pizza, which is a slightly bold claim for a fort café but a nice option to have if you're stretching the visit into a meal. It keeps different hours through the week, with Saturday running latest into the evening.
