What it’s like

Free grounds to wander around a Victorian tower, an Italian-style lake and gardens on the edge of Lever Park.

This is a walk through a bit of Victorian eccentricity rather than a ticketed attraction. You wander the grounds of what was once a grand estate, taking in the Italian Lake, the Great Lawn and Tennis Lawn, the Kitchen Gardens, and the Bungalow before working up to the Pigeon Tower itself, an odd, tall folly that gives the place its name. There's no admission charge, which makes it an easy one to add to a wider day out in Lever Park rather than a destination you have to plan around.

It suits anyone happy with a proper outdoor ramble more than a set of activities for kids to tick off. Younger children will get more out of the lake and open lawns to explore than the tower itself, and there's enough space here that nobody's rushing you along. It's outdoors throughout, so a dry day makes a real difference to how much you enjoy it.

The visitor centre keeps short, slightly fiddly hours, closed Fridays and only open till 3pm most days, so it's not somewhere to turn up to late afternoon expecting it to be open. Parking is free, though they ask for a text donation of £1 to £5, which feels a fair way to keep the place going. Dogs are welcome at most of the cafés dotted through Lever Park, including Great House Barn, Fika, The Little Tea Room and the Café at Spring Cottage, though a few run on limited hours or take private bookings.
