What it’s like
A part-timbered manor house with a woodland adventure playground and a walled Victorian kitchen garden to explore, free to roam grounds all year.
The house itself is the old bit, all dark timber and history, and they run object handling and role play sessions so kids get to touch things rather than just look. It's £6 for an adult and free for under 16s if they're with you, which makes it an easy one for a family ticket without actually buying a family ticket. The house only opens Wednesday to Sunday between late March and early November, so a wet Tuesday in February gets you the grounds and not much else.
Outside is where the free time goes. There's an adventure playground in the woodland with climbing frames and high nets, no charge for that bit, and the Victorian Kitchen Garden has accessible paths that work fine with a pushchair. Bring a picnic and use the tables dotted round the grounds, or get a coffee at the Woodland Café which sits inside the original kitchen and looks out over the old tennis court area.
If you want to see the house itself, get there at least half an hour before the 4pm closing time, they're firm about that being your last entry. Wheelchair access is ground floor only because of the building's age, and it's worth ringing ahead if that matters to your visit, though the accessible toilets outside in the grounds are there regardless. Parking's free on site, dogs are welcome in the gift shop, and if you fancy the train it's about a 25 minute walk from Bromley Cross station.
