What it’s like
Feed alpacas and llamas, cuddle rabbits and guinea pigs, and help bath the tortoises at this pay-on-the-day farm park.
The feed pots are where the money goes once you're in. A pound buys a scoop for the alpacas, llamas, sheep, goats, the big donkeys and the pigs, and that's usually the bit that eats up the morning. There are over 250 animals on site altogether, birds and exotics included, though the site's honest that some of the exotic animals aren't around over winter.
Animal handling happens twice a day, 11am and 2.30pm, and it's rabbits and guinea pigs for cuddles rather than anything bigger. Keepers also let visitors help bath the tortoises and feed the chickens, which is the sort of odd little job kids remember longer than the big animals. Spring brings lambs and piglets, and there's egg collecting through the year too.
It's £7 a head, under-2s go free, and there's no booking for a normal visit, you just pay at the till when you turn up. Open 10 to 5 Monday to Saturday, 10 to 4 on Sundays, with last entry an hour before close, so a Sunday afternoon visit needs to start by 3. There's a café on site for the inevitable snack stop, and a gift shop if you want a small animal-shaped souvenir on the way out.
If you're bringing a school group there's a discount rate at £6 a pupil with free places for teachers and helpers worked out on NSPCC guidelines, and talks can be built round the curriculum. For a one-off treat there's a VIP package too, £60 for up to five people, all day entry, five feed tubs and a private handling session where you pick five animals, but that one needs booking ahead rather than turning up on spec.
