What it’s like

Paint a mug, plate or figurine on bisque pottery, then come back a few weeks later once it's glazed and fired.

You pick a piece of bisque pottery, choose your paints and get stuck in. It's £5 for something miniature, around £12 to £15 for the usual mugs, plates, bowls and figurines, and up to £50 or more if you fancy something bigger. There's no extra studio fee or firing charge on top of that, which is refreshingly straightforward. Sessions run about an hour of actual painting, but you book a 1.5 hour slot so there's no need to rush a fiddly bit of detail.

The catch, and it's worth knowing before you go, is that you don't walk out with your painted piece. It has to be glazed and fired, which takes two to three weeks, so you're back for a second trip to collect it. Collection slots are set at specific times through the week (mornings and early afternoons on weekdays, a few windows on Saturday and Sunday).

Thursday evenings bring a movie and paint session, usually once a month and more often around half term, Christmas, Halloween and Easter. That's £2.50 extra during the day or £5 in the evening on top of your pottery price, worth it if you want to make a session feel like more of an occasion. You can bring your own snacks and drinks too, just keep them clear of the wet paint.

Parties for groups of ten or more can take over the upstairs studio for £75 room hire, with a movie added on for another £25. Worth flagging that the upstairs room has stairs and no lift.
