What it’s like

Forty minutes to crack an old bank vault, dance to disco lights, or break out of a cell before the clock runs out.

You've got forty minutes to escape, whether that's cracking a real old bank vault, breaking out of prison or solving a murder mystery. The room's set in an actual former bank, which is a nice touch, and one bit that'll stick in a seven-year-old's memory is a red button that sets off disco music mid-puzzle. The whole visit runs to about an hour once you count the briefing and the debrief, which feels about right for this age group's attention span.

Seven's the minimum age, and anyone under 12 needs an adult with them. Under 7s can actually tag along free, since there aren't any jumps or scares built in, which is a decent bit of flexibility if you've got a mixed-age group and don't want to leave a younger sibling out. You'll need a charged phone to play, which is an easy thing to forget on the way out the door.

Pricing shifts depending on group size: £18 a head for three or more, £19.50 each for a pair, £20 if you fancy going it alone. That solo price stings a bit given you're only getting an hour, but it's aimed at people wanting the full challenge to themselves. Birthday parties work out cheaper at £14 a child, with free cake and sparklers waiting in the final safe, plus a discounted pizza deal with a local partner if you want to feed the group afterwards.

It's wheelchair accessible, and you're based inside Presuming Ed's café, so there's brunch, cakes and sandwiches on hand before or after your session. Booking's required, though they'll take you with as little as an hour's notice if a slot's free, and solo bookers can let their teammates pay on the day. One catch worth knowing: under 18s aren't allowed in after 6pm, whether that's for the escape room or the bar, so this is very much a daytime family outing rather than an evening one.
