What it’s like

Locked-room puzzle games near Tottenham Court Road, with an hour to crack the clues before the door opens.

This is proper puzzle-solving territory, not a soft play with a theme slapped on. You get shown into a themed room, the door shuts, and you've got 60 minutes to find the clues, crack the codes and get out before the clock beats you. It suits kids from about 8 up, and any under-16s need a paying adult in the room with them, so this isn't one you drop the kids off for and go get a coffee.

The whole visit runs to about 90 minutes once you count the waivers and pre-game briefing at the start and a bit of time in the lounge and bar afterwards for photos. Pricing works on group size rather than a flat rate, so it drops the more of you there are, from £42 a head for two players down to £31 each if you can fill a room with six. Card only here, no cash, which catches people out.

If the room's not enough of a challenge, there's also City Hunt, an outdoor game around the city at £20 a player. It runs regardless of the forecast, and they'll hand you a poncho if it's tipping down, so pack sun cream just in case it's the other kind of day.

Birthday parties get their own packages, from £28 a head for an after-school Monday to Thursday slot up to £44 for the standard package, and if you've got ten or more in your group one guest goes free. Parties are built for groups up to 12. Worth knowing that security won't let you through without proof of your booking, so have it ready on your phone.
