What it’s like

Lock yourselves in a themed room and puzzle your way out in an hour, or take the games outside with a City Hunt.

You get sixty minutes in a themed room to solve the clues and get out, with a game master watching on CCTV in case you genuinely get stuck. It's built for groups of two to six, and the pricing rewards a bigger team: two players pay £30 each, but get six of you in and it drops right down to £21 a head. Bring three or four and you're somewhere in between, £27 or £23 a head, so it's worth rounding up a couple more mates before you book rather than after.

There's also City Hunt, an outdoor version at £15 a player that runs whatever the forecast throws at it, with ponchos handed out if it rains. That one's suitable for all ages and under-8s go free with two paying adults, but the escape rooms themselves are eight and up, and anyone under 16 needs a paying adult over 18 in with them.

A room booking runs about ninety minutes once you count the prep beforehand and the hour actually inside, City Hunt takes longer at up to two hours outdoors. It's card only on site, so don't turn up planning to pay cash, and there are no refunds if someone in your group cancels on the day. Wheelchair users are catered for on plenty of the games, up to two per room, and a carer supporting a player gets in free. Victoria station is a three minute walk if you're coming by train.

Birthday parties run from £20 a head for an after-school weekday slot, or £30 standard, and the birthday child gets in free once you've got ten or more booked in. Fair warning on the puzzles: some of them genuinely need two people working together to crack, so don't book a lone parent and one bored kid expecting to breeze through.

Reckon on ninety minutes all in for the escape room, though you're only locked in for sixty of that. City Hunt runs longer, up to two hours out on the streets.

Do we need to book ahead?

Booking's required, yes. You can add someone extra later if there's room in your group, they just pay when they arrive.

It runs in pretty much all weather, ponchos included. Only proper severe weather gets it cancelled, and they'll rebook you if that happens.
