What it’s like

A strictly over-18s games bar with duck pin bowling, ice-free curling and shuffleboard.

This one's not for the children. Roxy Ball Room Deansgate operates a strictly over-18s policy with Challenge 25 on the door, so if you were hoping for a family games afternoon, this isn't it.

For the grown-ups in the group, there's duck pin bowling at £8 a game, ice-free curling by the hour, and a run of table games like shuffleboard, tech darts and crazy pool that all shift up a few quid on Thursday to Saturday nights. Karaoke's in there too if you want to make an evening of it, off-peak from £8 a head and peak nights nearer £10. It's card only throughout, so don't bother hunting for change.

The dress code is worth knowing before you turn up: no sportswear, no football shirts, no tracksuit bottoms, and fancy dress only if it stays on the tasteful side. Bowling has its own footwear rules too, flat-soled and non-marking shoes only, so heels and flip-flops won't get you past the games desk. They'll rent you bowling shoes if you haven't brought the right ones.

Gaming tables are the sort of thing that fill up, so booking ahead online is the sensible move, though they'll take walk-ins if there's space. Drinking tables work more casually, first-come-first-served or booked, whichever suits. Opening hours stretch late on Fridays and Saturdays, right up to half twelve, which tells you this is built for evenings out rather than daytime visits.

  • Peak pricing (Thursday to Saturday) is a couple of pounds more than off-peak across most games

Plan your visit

Can children come along?

No, it's strictly over-18s with a Challenge 25 policy on the door, so under-18s can't be accommodated at all.

Do we need to book?

Gaming tables are best booked online since they do fill up, but walk-ins are fine if there's space. Drinking tables are first-come-first-served or can be booked.

How much does it cost?

Prices start around £8, for things like duck pin bowling per game or karaoke per person per hour. Thursday to Saturday nights cost a bit more across the board than Sunday to Wednesday.

Is there a dress code?

Sportswear, football shirts and tracksuit bottoms aren't allowed. Fancy dress is fine as long as it's tasteful.

What shoes do I need for bowling?

Flat-soled, non-marking shoes only, no heels or open-toe shoes. Bowling shoes are available to rent at the games desk if yours don't fit the bill.

Can I pay with cash?

The bars are cashless, so bring a card.

What time do you open?

Monday to Wednesday it's 3pm to 11pm, Thursday 3pm to midnight, and Friday and Saturday it stretches from midday to half past midnight. Sunday hours are midday to 10pm.

Can I book a table for food?

General dining doesn't need a booking, though it can be arranged. For group parties, they ask you to get in touch directly to sort food reservations.

Does the shuffleboard powder contain nuts?

It's made with walnut shell rather than the walnut itself, which they say carries fewer allergens than the nut. It's still worth being cautious if anyone has a nut allergy.

Do you show live sport?

Sky and TNT Sports are shown at most sites, plus major terrestrial events at selected venues. Check their socials to see what's on where.
