What it’s like

A working Norman castle you can only see by guided tour, with the grounds and history to explore around it.

This is not a roped-off ruin. Durham Castle is still a working building, which is exactly what makes it interesting and exactly why you can't just rock up whenever you fancy. Visits happen by tour, exploring the Norman castle and its grounds, and because real life carries on inside it, tours can get cancelled at short notice. That's a genuine faff if you've built a day around it, so it's worth treating the tour as a bonus rather than the whole plan.

The site is upfront that it closes for fresher's week in early October, for congregation in mid January and late June, and over the festive period from late December into early January. None of that is a surprise once you know it's tied to a functioning institution rather than a museum that opens on the dot every day of the year. It does mean the calendar matters here more than at most castles.

Given the tour format, this leans towards kids old enough to follow a guide round a historic building rather than toddlers who'll want to run at the walls. There's no pinned-down price or age guidance from the site itself, so the sensible move is to check with Palace Green Library or the Visitor Centre before you set off, especially if a cancelled tour would wreck your afternoon.

Tours may be cancelled last minute
  • Tours can be cancelled last minute, so have a backup plan for that afternoon
  • It's a working building, not a static museum, which shapes when you can visit
  • The grounds and history are the main draw here, not play equipment

Plan your visit

Can we just turn up and look round?

You see the castle by guided tour rather than wandering freely, and tours can be cancelled at short notice because it's still a working building.

Is it open all year?

It closes for fresher's week in early October, for congregation in mid January and late June, and over the festive period from late December into early January.

How do we check if a tour is running?

Check ahead with Palace Green Library or the Visitor Centre before you travel.

Is it suitable for young children?

It's a guided tour of a historic Norman castle rather than a hands-on attraction, so it suits kids old enough to follow a guide around.
