Derby Museum and Art Gallery is free city-centre culture for a rainy half-day. The Joseph Wright Gallery holds the world's largest collection of his work, and the Royal Lancers Museum sits inside the Soldiers Story gallery.
Entry is free. Open Tuesday to Saturday 10am-5pm, Sunday 12-4pm; closed Mondays. The Coffee House in the Ceramics Gallery does family-friendly food, and there is a gift shop.
Nearest parking is Bold Lane (validate for a museum day rate). Main entrance is on The Strand opposite Sadler Gate - not through the library next door.

How do we find it?
Offsite parking is available nearby at Bold Lane and Chapel Street car parks; parking cards can be validated at the Museum and Art Gallery for a discounted rate of £2.70 for a day. The nearest offsite car park is on Bold Lane, 50 metres from the museum, open 24 hours. Direct trains from London to Derby take less than two hours. Frequent bus services operated by Trent Barton and Arriva run into the city centre; Derby Bus Station is a 10 minute walk away. Bicycle racks are outside the museum entrance on The Strand. The main entrance is on The Strand, opposite the end of Sadler Gate and within view of Bold Lane car park; it is not possible to enter through the adjoining Derby Library.
