What it’s like

Sea caves tucked into the cliffs at Cullercoats Bay, only there to explore when the tide's out.

This one's free, it's outdoors, and it only exists on your terms if the tide plays along. At Cullercoats Bay, the cliffs have carved out proper sea caves that kids can duck into and poke around, the sort of thing that beats any playground for a good half hour of imagination.

The catch, and it's a real one, is that you can't just turn up whenever. The caves are only accessible when the tide is out, so you'll want to check tide times before you set off rather than arrive to find the whole thing underwater. Build the visit around the tide, not the other way round.

There's no set age range given for this one, but a rocky beach with caves to explore tends to suit kids old enough to scramble about a bit rather than tiny toddlers who'd rather be carried. Bring shoes that can get wet and muddy, because caves at low tide are rarely a clean job.

Parking's at Beaconsfield Car Park, NE30 4JF.
