What it’s like

Themed escape rooms where the family hunts for clues and hidden doors against a 60 minute clock.

You get 15 minutes of briefing then an hour on the clock to crack the puzzles, find the hidden bits and get out before time runs out. There are a few different rooms to pick from, and the site lists Afterlife and The Mysterious Case of Hugh Dunnitt as six-player games, while First Contact stretches to eight, so it's worth matching the room to how many of you are going.

Under-16s have to be with an adult the whole time, and there has to be at least one paying adult in the room if kids are playing. Child pricing is £15 a head, but there's a catch: your whole team still has to hit a minimum spend of £44 on quieter days or £45 at peak times, so a couple of kids and one adult won't quite cut it on price alone. Adult tickets start from £12.

It's all indoors and up one or two flights of stairs, no ground floor option, worth knowing if buggies or bad knees are involved. Sunday hours are a touch shorter than the rest of the week, running 11am to 8.30pm rather than the usual 10.15am start. Parking's easy enough, with a car park right on the doorstep that gets cheaper after 4.30pm, and the tram stop is a short walk if you fancy leaving the car at home.

There's no age-sensitive content in the rooms according to the site. Walk-ins are welcome if a slot's free, but booking online first is the safer bet, especially at weekends.

Plan your visit

How much does it cost?

Adults start from £12 and it's £15 for anyone 15 or under. Your team needs to hit a minimum spend of £44 off-peak or £45 at peak times, even with kids in the mix.

Do we need to book in advance?

You can book online ahead of time, or turn up and pay for a free slot if one's going. Booking first is the safer bet if you want a specific time.

Is there an age limit?

There's no age-restricted content in the rooms, but every under-16 needs an adult with them throughout, and at least one adult has to be paying if children are playing.

How long does it take?

You get a 15 minute briefing plus 60 minutes of gameplay, so budget about an hour and a quarter all in.

How many people can play at once?

Afterlife and The Mysterious Case of Hugh Dunnitt take up to six players, and First Contact can take up to eight. Bigger groups can get in touch to see what's possible.

Is there parking nearby?

Eldon Street Car Park is right on the doorstep and cheaper after 4.30pm, with Devonshire Street Car Park as a backup if that's full.
