What it’s like
Wander round more than 50 working artist studios and a free gallery, open weekends only.
This is less a "kids' activity" and more a proper wander round a working art building. Over 50 artist studios are open to poke your head into, and there's a gallery with changing exhibitions on top of that. It's free to get in, which makes it an easy one to slot into a weekend if you've got half an hour spare and a child who likes looking at paint and pottery rather than pressing buttons.
It only opens Saturdays and Sundays, 11am to 4pm, so this isn't a weekday filler. That's a fairly tight window if you're working round nap times or a toddler's patience, but it does mean the place isn't rammed on a Tuesday afternoon because it's simply shut.
Worth knowing before you turn up with a buggy: the building has a lot of stairs. The shop's got level access, but the gallery is up a three-step staircase and the studios are reached by internal or gallery stairs. There are no accessible toilets either, so if you've got a wheelchair or a buggy you're not keen on lugging up steps, this one needs a bit of planning.
Parking is pay-and-display in the N8 zone at £3.10 an hour on weekdays, but since the studios only open weekends, you'll actually get it free. Buses stop close by at Mill Lane and The Shore, both a few minutes' walk, and the tram stops at The Shore too if that's easier with a pushchair.
