What it’s like

Free art gallery and observatory site on Calton Hill, with two cafés and paths open to explore, no cars allowed anywhere near it.

This one's up on Calton Hill, so the walk there is half the day out before you've even seen any art. It's free to get in, which takes the pressure off if you've only got twenty minutes in you before someone wants a snack. The site includes the old City Observatory, and the paths around it are wheelchair and mobility scooter friendly, though the Observatory building itself has a 10cm step at the entrance that might need a hand with a buggy or a chair.

There's no getting a car anywhere near the place. You'll park on Regent Road or at Q-Park Omni and walk in, and if you're pushing a buggy the easiest route is the access road from Regent Road by the Royal High School entrance. Blue badge holders get a bit more help, with gated access and parking on top of the hill during opening hours. It's a genuine downside if you were hoping to just pull up outside, so build in the extra ten minutes.

Once you're there, two cafés cover you. Collective Gallery Coffee is the grab-a-drink-and-ice-cream kiosk, while Cafe Calton does proper brunch and evening food, and they'd rather you booked ahead for that one. Toilets are on site but they ask for a 50p donation, and they're only open when the gallery is, so don't leave it to the last minute on the way out.

It's shut Mondays and Tuesdays, open 10 till 5 the rest of the week. Hours shift a bit around October and March for the change in daylight, and if you're heading up on foot after dark in winter they suggest the path from Waterloo Place through the smaller South Gate, since some areas aren't well lit.
