What it’s like

32 climbing walls, a speed wall and a vertical drop slide, with a 90 minute session that's mostly briefing then an hour of climbing.

Thirty-two climbing lines here, ranging from the sort a four-year-old can have a go at to the ones that'll test a confident eleven-year-old. There's a speed wall for racing each other and a vertical drop slide that costs extra, £3 for one person or £2.50 each if two or more of you fancy it. Point-scoring challenges mean you can turn it into a bit of competition rather than just climbing for the sake of it.

The 90 minutes is really 30 minutes of briefing and harness fitting, then an hour actually climbing, which feels a bit short once you factor in getting kitted up and settled. Kids from about 2.5 can join in at the toddler rate, and it's £16 for anyone from age four up including adults, or £13.50 for the little ones. You don't have to climb yourself, spectators don't need to book, but if you do want to join in you'll need the safety briefing too.

Bags and coats aren't allowed in the climbing arena, so use the free lockers at reception rather than lugging anything round with you. Wear trainers and tie long hair back, no open-toed shoes or jewellery. Parking's free on site but the site itself admits it fills up, and they're closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays, so check which day you're planning around before you commit to a session.

Woodpeckers Diner does fresh food and coffee on site, useful if you've got a spectator parent who fancies a flat white while the kids are on the walls. It's wheelchair accessible on the ground floor with a Birdy Hoist for getting climbers kitted up, though the party rooms aren't on the ground floor.

Plan your visit

How much does it cost?

£16 for anyone aged four and up, including adults who climb. Toddlers from 2.5 to under 4 are £13.50.

How long is a session?

90 minutes in total, but that's 30 minutes of safety briefing and harness fitting followed by an hour of actual climbing.

Do we need to book?

Booking's strongly recommended, especially at weekends and school holidays when it gets busy.

Is it OK for a toddler?

Yes, from 2.5 years old there's a toddler rate, so it's not just for older kids.

Do parents have to climb too?

Not at all. Spectators don't need to book, but if you do want to climb you'll need to do the safety briefing and get a wristband.

Is the vertical drop slide included?

It's an extra. £3 for one person, £2.50 each if there are two or more of you going on it.

What should we wear?

Trainers and comfortable clothing. No open-toed shoes, boots or heels, and tie back long hair and skip the jewellery.

Is there parking?

Free on-site parking at the front, though the car park can get quite full.

What about food?

Woodpeckers Diner is on site serving fresh food, coffee and drinks.

Is it wheelchair accessible?

The ground floor facilities are accessible and there's a Birdy Hoist to help wheelchair users get kitted up. The party rooms are the exception, they're not on the ground floor.

Do you do birthday parties?

There are Gold, Silver, Bronze and Tot's Tea Party packages running up to two and a quarter hours, with food freshly prepared on site.
