What it’s like

Free drop-in visits to meet farm animals, learn where eggs come from, and see how big the different animals really get.

You wander round meeting the animals, and the site's own line about "seeing where eggs come from" tells you this is aimed at the practical end of things rather than a petting zoo with a mascot. Expect to compare animal sizes up close too, which is one of those details that sounds small on paper but is exactly the sort of thing a five-year-old repeats to everyone for a week.

Casual visits are free, which is rare enough these days to mention twice. If you're coming as part of a group of ten or more it's £3 a head by arrangement, otherwise you just turn up. Opening is weekends only, 10am to 3pm, and last admittance plus the last feed is 2pm, so don't roll up at half two expecting the full show.

There's a café on site doing cake and hot drinks, useful for splitting the visit into two halves if you've got a toddler whose attention span runs out before the animals' feeding time does. It's a four minute walk from North Fleet Street bus stop if you're coming in on the 5, 16, 32 or 32X from Hanley, handy if you'd rather not deal with parking on a Saturday.

Weekend-only hours and a 2pm feed cutoff mean this suits a morning plan more than an afternoon one. Get there early enough to catch the feed and you've got the best two hours of the visit sorted.
