What it’s like
Paint a pottery piece, get a hand or footprint done, then let the kids loose in the free soft play while it dries on the shelf.
The main event is picking a piece of pottery, a party animal, a mug, whatever takes their eye, and painting it at a table with the family. There's a free soft play area too, so if you've got one child who wants to paint and another who's had enough after ten minutes, both are covered. They also do hand and footprints for babies upwards, which is a nice one to get done while you're there rather than a separate trip.
Sessions run up to 1.5 hours and painting starts at £14. Walk-ins are welcome, but the site says booked sessions get priority, so if you've got your heart set on a Saturday afternoon slot it's worth locking it in rather than chancing it. The café does hot and cold drinks, cakes and sweets, plus weekday snacks and light lunches, though that light lunch bit stops in the school holidays, which is exactly when you're most likely to be in there with the kids.
It's open every day from 10:45am, with the last full session between 3:30 and 5pm, so it's not a first-thing-in-the-morning outing. Parking's free on site, and it's a short walk from the 18 bus final stop if you're coming without a car. For a birthday party they'll do the works for £19 a head, minimum 8 children, and that covers the ceramic, the varnish, soft play and a party buffet, all inside the same 1.5 hours.
An hour and a half is enough for painting without anyone getting bored of a paintbrush, and the soft play means you're not watching the clock the whole time either.
